Abstract

The title given to this project is that of "Uma anatomia do poder eclesiástico". The expression "ecclesiastical power" is in itself a subversion of the logic and dynamics of ministry in the Church. There are numerous occasions in the Gospels where the theme emerges. The history of Christianity also helps us to identify moments and situations of subversion of ministeriality in the Church. The reflection and experience of the Church's relationship with the world are also not without ambiguities. How, then, did these logics of "power" develop and feed into the Church? What are their major consequences? Which lessons have been learned and how can we avoid falling back into similar situations of subversion of the nature and mission of the Church? To answer these questions, and others that may arise in the meantime, we propose to perform "an anatomy". Anatomy studies the body, in its structure and form, of human beings and animals from corpses in order, in a paradoxical way, to help care for the living. The objective of this "anatomy of ecclesiastical power" is to observe and identify the structures and forms of clericalism in the contemporary Church, particularly in the Portuguese reality. The intention is not just an exercise in dilettantism of any kind, but a pedagogical, prophylactic, even therapeutic one, in order to prevent and avoid subversions of the dynamics of ecclesial life that lead to any kind of abuse.
