(PhD, Cambridge, 1991) Is a visual archaeologist at San Francisco State University. His early work was on European prehistory and prehistoric art in the field (Romania) and in publication. His Balkan Prehistory (Routledge, 2000) and Prehistoric Figurines: Representation and Corporeality (Routledge, 2005) are now classic texts. Doug’s 2010 exhibition, Unearthed (Sainsbury Center, Norwich), attacked traditional museum presentation of prehistoric art. Currently, Doug is developing art/archaeology, a new discipline where archaeologists and artists create work beyond existing academic boundaries. Doug’s art/archaeology includes exhibitions (Creative (Un)makings, MIEC, 2020) and his book Breaking the Surface: an Art/Archaeology of Prehistoric Architecture (Oxford, 2018).
