The main objective of this book is to document and analyze the reception of German silent films in Portugal from the emergence of the seventh art until the appearance and implementation of sound films in the early 1930s. In addition to aesthetic and theoretical aspects, the historical, political, economic, and technological factors that determined the importation and distribution of the films under consideration are investigated. This first broad-spectrum presentation of Portuguese film criticism of the period provides a basis for further complementary and transdisciplinary studies. The approach focuses on the role of the Portuguese specialized press as an instrument that recorded and influenced selection processes and the reception of German, Austrian and Swiss film production in Portugal.
